10 Awesome Wrestlers WWE Sacrificed For The Greater Good

2. Kevin Owens (Fastlane 2017)

Kevin Owens' Universal Title reign didn't hit the right notes. His victory worked, and many were happy to see an internet favourite take Raw's top strap, but KO's old 'Prizefighter' gimmick was gutted as creative turned him into a generic chickensh*t heel. Owens' portrayal was strong, but he'd gone from one of WWE's biggest badasses to a wet blanket in no time. It was too jarring to be believable.

Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and Braun Strowman all fell to his cheating ways during this time. At Fastlane 2017, he faced Goldberg. That's when sh*t went south.

Chris Jericho's music hit before the bell. 'Y2J' distracted Owens from the stage, and Goldberg took advantage, hitting the Spear, the Jackhammer, and the 1-2-3 to become Universal Champion at 50 years old. It took him just 22 seconds.

The Greater Good:

The Universal Title was a joke before WrestleMania 34. A punchline. Strapping Brock Lesnar at the apex of his awesome feud with Goldberg and having him embark upon a year-long reign was WWE's answer to this, hence Big Bad Bill's transitional run and victory over KO. Whether this boosted the belt or dealt further damage is up to you.
