5. Royal Rumble 2005

Vengeance 2002
WWE

Arguably the greatest Royal Rumble match of all time, with a finish so good it couldn’t have been written.

Royal Rumble 2005 began with the now-heel Edge taking out his jealous frustrations on firm fan favourite Shawn Michaels in a forgotten gem.

Also on the card was a triple threat match between John ‘Bradshaw’ Layfield, Big Show and Kurt Angle which shouldn’t have been half as good as this. JBL was great as a heel, but was not a very good wrestler, despite his constant acclamations of being a wrestling god, however Angle was in full swing in this match, proving that it is hard to have a bad match with him.

The Rumble itself was superbly boded, with Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero kicking things off. Not only was the beginning a nice nod back to the climax of WrestleMania XX, with the pair hugging as the show went off air, but this set the pace of the match, which constantly delivered.

What’s more, in the final moments of the match, Batista and John Cena toppled over the top rope with both of them hitting the mat at ringside at the same time. This led to the hilarious shadenfreuder moment of Vince tearing both of his quadricep muscles, yelling at both wrestlers to start the ending sequence again.
