Daniel Bryan kick John Cena SummerSlam 2013

SummerSlam 2013 may have gotten off to an inauspicious start - the opening contest, a "Ring of Fire" bout between Bray Wyatt and Kane is better off forgotten - but two of the best WWE matches of the year ended up creating a can't-miss show.

In the main event, John Cena defended the WWE Championship against his hand-picked opponent, Daniel Bryan. Though the build to the match got a little muddled with the involvement of the McMahon family, the bout itself was nothing short of excellent. Bryan showed all the skill that made him the best wrestler in the world, and Cena was right there with him the whole way.

In the end, Bryan debuted his running knee finisher to cleanly pin Cena for the belt... then was immediately swerved by special guest referee Triple H, who helped MITB winner Randy Orton beat him for the title.

The other major match was a battle of past and present "Paul Heyman guys", as CM Punk took on Brock Lesnar. Though Punk got a lot of offense in on Lesnar (to the point where the match felt noticeably unrealistic in places), it was still a wild 25 minutes filled with nonstop action. Some people even preferred this bout to the main event.

Those great battles, plus a very good Alberto Del Rio-Christian match, made for one hell of a show.
