10 Best WWE References In Rap Music

2. "I'm Me" By Royce Da 5'9

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu0d6OAf4Gg Lyric: "We the kind that supply the rock like Chris Paul/The same kind that aim nines, insane conscience/And then we get rid of the rock like Dwayne Johnson" Coming into rap with someone like Eminem means that your ability and lyrical dexterity should be strong. Double meanings, multi-syllabic lines, humorous punchlines and complex comparisons are all integral parts of both Eminem and Royce Da 5'9's arsenal. Royce shows off double meanings here, using "rock" as a slang for crack rocks while comparing it to a basketball being referred to as the "rock". He then name drops Chris Paul, one of the National Basketball Association's best passers. That might be enough for some people, but Royce then goes on to use the same "rock" drug reference and then flipping it to make the word mean Dwayne Johnson's famous nickname. At the time (2009), The Rock was out of wrestling and was being billed as nothing but Dwayne Johnson. It was when he was alienating some wrestling fans that felt he was distancing himself from the business that made him famous. Those fans wanted him to at least go by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, not just his government name, but he decided to "drop" the nickname from his acting career. Some rappers get complex for no real reason and it seems to hurt their work. They end up rapping above the heads of many of their listeners. As one of the more skilled lyricists in all of rap, Royce is able to spin some complexity into his songs without going over his listeners. The way he was able to weave in and out of bars about different uses of the word "rock" is very impressive.
