Big first time matches were far easier to put together in the early days of the WrestleMania era.

The World Wrestling Federation had four PPVs a year by 1990, and a big first time match was pretty much needed to maximise numbers for each show. Even so, the showdown between Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior transcended this, quite clearly a bigger deal than Hogan vs. King Kong Bundy or Akeem.

It was billed as the Ultimate Challenge, but in reality it was something of a torch-passing match. Hogan was to take some time off, and Warrior was to take on the hyperactive steroid ridden mantle for the foreseeable future. It was a big deal, to say the least.

Not only that but Hogan would be pinned 1-2-3 in the middle of the ring, although he did kick out at 3.0000000000001. This proved that on this night in Toronto the power of the Warrior was stronger than Hulkamania, which in 1990 was actually a legitimate question that people wanted to see answered.

The match itself was far better than it had any right to be, too. It was huge, it was good.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man.
