10 Biggest Wrestling Scandals Of The 1990s
1. The Death Of Owen Hart
Every bit as talented as his brother Bret, Owen Hart could have easily been a World champion in WWE. Alas, his legacy is overshadowed by the awful circumstances of his untimely death.
At the Over the Edge pay-per-view in 1999, Hart was supposed to descend from the rafters as 'The Blue Blazer', his comical superhero alter ego. Tragically, a gimmicked harness that was not fit for purpose released before it was supposed to, and Hart fell 78ft to the ring below.
The accident happened while a video package was being played to the home audience. Viewers in the building couldn't really see either, as the lights had been lowered, but the end result was the same. Owen Hart died of his injuries that very night, at the age of just 34.
Hart's death was a travesty in every sense. The fact that he had died performing what was supposed to be a silly stunt was stomach-churning, as was Vince McMahon's decision to not to cancel the event.
Easily one of the worst things to ever happen in the wrestling business, Owen Hart's death brought about a dark end for one of the sport's brightest lights.
