If Michaels had his way, he would have ended up in WCW in 1997. Steaming mad after a heated tussle with Bret Hart in the locker room, Michaels temporarily quit the company, demanding his release. He was unhappy without Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and Sean Waltman surrounding him, and wanted to go where he could be 'happy'. McMahon refused to grant his request, reasoning with him that WCW wouldn't use him correctly.

Thus, Michaels stuck with WWE until the purchase of WCW, sitting out the last three years of WCW's life span with what was once thought of as a career-ending back injury. McMahon's words proved prophetic when WCW managed to squander the news-grabbing story of Canadian icon Bret Hart jumping ship in 1997.
