10 Current Best Talkers In Wrestling

There is more to being a professional wrestler than just being great between the ropes.

A large part of AEW's focus this year has seen the clash between the 'wrestling focused' Blackpool Combat Club, and 'Sports Entertainers' the Jericho Appreciation Society. The irony of the feud has been that the best parts of it have happened on the microphone or in wild, over the top brawls, which lean heavily on sports entertainment. But it highlights an exceptional point about pro wrestling.

Being able to cut a promo and to work a crowd whilst doing so, is the connecting dot between an exceptional wrestler and a superstar talent.

Case in point, the difference between Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle during the early-2000s. Both exceptional in the ring, yet Angle's far superior mic game elevated him to one of the greatest of all time. Benoit's legacy has quite rightly been erased due to the horrible events of summer 2007, but he never connected the same way with the fan base.

It's why Bret Hart, despite being arguably the best wrestler to step between the ropes, never hit the heights of The Rock or Stone Cold when it came to mass appeal. It's why an expert talker like Paul Heyman was aligned with a generational talent like Brock Lesnar, who couldn't command a crowd with a microphone.

Obviously, we would expect Paul Heyman to be in this list due to his unbeliavable promos, but as we are focusing on wrestlers for this list, the 'Wise Man' will have to make do with a shout out here.

Kevin Owens is a joy of a professional wrestler.

There were many eyebrows raised in December last year, when KO penned a new deal with WWE. After years of poor booking, it seemed like a certainty that the former Universal Champion would wind up in All Elite Wrestling, where a number of his indie running buddies were.

He even made cryptic allusions to it on Twitter.

But WWE know what they have with Owens, even if they've never fully realised his full potential yet. It's no surprise that Kevin was the man chosen to face 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin at WrestleMania 38 in Austin's first match in nearly two decades. Not just because Owens is wonderful in the ring, but because they needed someone to build the match up on their own.

The 'Texas Rattlesnake' wasn't around, so it was left to the brawling Canadian to run his mouth, popping the wrestling community with a spot-on Stone Cold impression and having one of the greatest WrestleMania moments in recent memory.

Furthermore, look at how quickly audience investment in Ezekiel dwindled when Kevin Owens went down with a minor injury. It was Kev's incredible promos and believable disbelief that got that gimmick over as much as it did.

Owens is exceptional on the mic, and never was that made clearer than on Triple H's first few weeks in charge of WWE creative, when a fired up Owens proclaimed the return of the 'Prizefighter.' More badass KO? Yes please!
