Not even John Cena is immune to an injury to the neck. Back at SummerSlam 2008, Cena suffered a herniated disk in his clash with Batista and was forced to undergo surgery. Dr. Joseph Maroon explained how the procedure involved the removal of a large disk fragment compression on the spinal cord which was weakening the nerve leading to the right arm. WWE claimed that the injury was sustained when Cena landed hard from a Batista Bomb via the top rope. If that was the case, then he admirably battled through taking another huge bump from a second Batista Bomb before finishing the match. Cena would ultimately return three months later at the Survivor Series pay-per-view in his home state of Massachusetts, where he defeated Chris Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship. The relatively quick recovery was a fitting example of the Never Give Up slogan that Cena so fondly advocates.
