9. Sting vs. Hulk Hogan (SuperBrawl 1998)
Starrcade 1997 featured the culmination of a year-long storyline in which Hulk Hogan and the New World Order staged a takeover of World Championship Wrestling, destroying any and all wrestlers in their path. Except for one. That one man, Sting, watched from a distance as the company he once championed was systematically torn to the ground by the outsiders. Almost emotionless, his face painted in white and black, he would descend from the rafters and fend off the invaders with a baseball bat before returning to wherever it was that he emerged from. In the biggest match ever promoted by Eric Bischoff and the Ted Turner-owned company, Sting overcame a controversial false finish early in the contest to defeat Hogan and capture the heavyweight title of the world. The match was such a financial success for WCW that it only made sense to book the rematch as soon as possible so, at SuperBrawl just two months later, The Stinger and Hollywood Hogan met in a match that was epic only in hype. Hogan was slow and boring while Sting lacked the energy and excitement one would have hoped to have seen from the biggest babyface in WCW. Incessant run-ins, which were a key element of WCW main events throughout the second half of the 1990s, covered up for the stars' deficiencies but it was fooling no one. Fans understood what was going on and by the time Sting was declared the winner and "stil heavyweight champion of the world," fans were ready to move on from the pairing, which had produced largely disappointing results.
