Back into the more familiar territory of full-time wrestlers tearing up the script - but this time it was an innocent fan who found himself on the receiving end. In a case of mistaken identity, CM Punk lumped a member of the audience after having decided to vacate the ring through the Sacramento crowd.

Usually, fans behave themselves when wrestlers take to the stands. For whatever reason though, the audience was a little more hostile on this night, with Punk taking the brunt of the abuse.

Pausing at the top of the gangway to listen to Vince McMahon’s promo, various members of the audience starting roughing up the WWE Champion. After shrugging off most of the perpetrators, a belligerent nudge to the back of the head pushed Punk over the edge, and he turned and took a swipe at his assumed assailant.

Of course, the guy he clobbered wasn’t the guy who’d hit him, as the rogue prodder had very nobly hidden himself from harm’s way.

Apologies from the company and Punk himself followed, with the WWE reaching an out-of-court settlement with the fan before matters escalated any further.
