There's a lot of what if here.

Firstly, Mustafa Ali was meant to be in the Elimination Chamber match for the WWE Championship in 2019. He picked up an injury just before, which took him off TV long enough to miss the pay-per-view but come back a month later. There's always been rumours that he was meant to go all the way with WWE title holder Daniel Bryan, then lose in the final moments.

Ironically, it was Kofi Kingston who did just that. The former-Jamaican was drafted in for the injured Ali and the fan reaction to the veteran star was electric.

After that match, the rocket that should've been strapped to Ali was redirected to Kingston. Kofi winning the WWE belt at WrestleMania 35 was a feelgood moment, after he'd been with the company for so long, but it wasn't the original plan.

Road Dogg has confirmed that Ali-Bryan was the original match, but the injury meant they had to pivot quickly. Instead, Ali's Road to WrestleMania meant taking the fall in a consolation WWE title match at Fastlane, having his first name taken away, then spending the Show of Shows marooned in catering.

Fans were so close to seeing a brand new star emerge.

When I'm not trying my hardest to visit all 50 U.S. states, I'm listening to music from the 80s, watching TV from the 90s, and reminiscing about growing up in the 00s. I'm currently living in Melbourne, Australia so WWE premium live events are on Sunday afternoons for me; the absolute dream.
