You could argue that, in late 1997, Bret Hart was the biggest name in pro wrestling. Coming off of the Montreal Screwjob, and the way he left the WWF, everyone was talking about him, so his signing to WCW should have been a complete game-changer. Should have been, but wasn't, as we all know now. From the very first day of his arrival in WCW, you knew the ball had been dropped. You have the sport's hottest free agent, full of nothing but venom for your hated rivals, and you... make him a special guest referee for a match between Eric Bischoff and Larry Zbyszko?!? Why?!? Yes, he had a no-compete clause from his WWF release, so he couldn't actually wrestle in his WCW debut, but that was the best idea that was pitched? Later that same night, he was involved in a completely overbooked mess of a WCW World Title match between Hulk Hogan and Sting, where he got involved and attacked the match's actual referee, took over as the new referee (because, apparently, if you're a special guest referee, you can pretty much insert yourself into any other match on that card), and declared Sting the winner. Once he actually began wrestling for the company, he always... always... took a backseat to Hogan. Many felt it was Hogan's apparent dislike of Hart that fueled this. For years, it was rumored that Hogan didn't think Bret was marketable as a top star because of his size and his promo ability. At the same time, Hogan didn't want to wrestle Bret, because he knew Bret would make him look foolish in the ring. In WCW, Hogan was the big star, while Bret was a midcarder for much of his tenure, wrestling for the Television and United States Titles far more often than being involved in the WCW World Title picture. In fact, it would be nearly two years after his in-ring debut for WCW before he would get a televised WCW World Title shot, which absolutely boggles the mind. Bret had to sit back and watch everything he had spent years building get tossed to the side as if it meant nothing. 1999 was an unfortunate year for Bret, in and out of the ring. His brother passed away in what remains the biggest live tragedy in pro wrestling history, but Bret also suffered what ended up being a career-ending concussion, all while watching the WWF's popularity skyrocket thanks to a villainous heel authority figure that just so happened to be created when he screwed Bret out of the WWF Title two years prior.
