10 Most Obscure Title Wins In WWE History
3. Bob Backlund And Pedro Morales - WWE Title
If 18 years feels like a long time ago, brace yourself for
this next entry. Because here we have a pair of World Tag Team Champions whose reign
dates back to the summer of 1980.
The men in question are Bob Backlund and Pedro Morales, and with both men being former WWE Champions, this was arguably the most star-studded tandem of the pre-WrestleMania era.
Teaming for only the second time together, they went up against Afa and Sika, the Wild Samoans, at the Showdown at Shea 1980 event in a two-out-of-three falls contest. And they not only beat the reigning champs, but they won in the most convincing of fashions by a score of two falls to zero.
Rather than starting a dominating reign, though, the titles were vacated the very next day, on account of the fact that Backlund was already the Heavyweight Champion.
I’m not sure why they didn’t think of that scenario before the match took place, but either way it’s a condition that makes this reign one of the more obscure in company history.
