It's a logical step for a performer like 'the Hitman' to switch from the arena to the theater. In 2006, Bret swapped the ring for the stage to play The Genie in a local Calgary production of Aladdin. Following in the footsteps of such Pantomime veterans as Bobby Davro and Julian Clary, Bret entertained the crowds with plenty of puns and "He's Behind You!" moments. And while we may poke gentle fun at Bret's genie costume and his big hair in the TV promo, there is actually a great story behind the experience. In a 2006 interview with Gay Calgary Magazine, Bret revealed that the role of the genie was a catharsis for him following his stroke and unceremonious exit from the wrestling business: "It means something to me because I never got the exit I was looking for in pro wrestling. I just got hurt and swept out and never really got the big goodbye. This isnt necessarily my farewell but its pretty close. It is so much fun and the fact that it relates to so many age levels in the audience, and such a great cast and crew - it really is a fun experience. This is the farewell I never got. As we all know, what probably seemed unthinkable to Bret at the time of the interview actually occurred just four years later when Bret returned to the WWE ring in 2010. Not only did he reunite in the ring to forgive Shawn Michaels, but he even went on to work a program with Vince McMahon himself, culminating in a Hart victory at Wrestlemania XXVI in front of 72,000 adoring fans. Did Bret look ridiculous in his Aladdin costume? Perhaps. But the fact that it brought Bret such joy and peace during one of the roughest parts of his life means that we can forgive this one. Especially when he was able to return to WWE for the real farewell that he craved and deserved, and he didn't have to wear Jim Neidhart's New Foundation pants to do it either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCX09bT0oq4
