In favour of keeping with the theme of escalation, what better way to trump turning on a sibling than to turn on an entire nation?

That’s what we saw from Sgt. Slaughter at the start of the ‘90s, as he aligned himself with General Adnan and began portraying an Iraqi sympathiser who’d grown tired of the “soft” and “weak” US regime, especially when compared to the brutality of the Iraqi government. Unsurprisingly, it rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, with Slaughter since revealing how he used to have to wear a bullet proof vest and his family frequently received bomb threats and bomb threats.

The angle would see Slaughter win the WWF Championship, before eventually losing the belt to Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VII. Results aside though, this had been one of the most original double-crossings we’d ever seen.

Given the state of the political situation in the Middle East, this entire angle was very much on the pulse—considerably more so than many of the WWE's storylines usually are. Plus, it was fairly progressive for its time, completely flipping the typical dynamic of a monster foreign heel facing the American hero. Here the monster heel was indeed American himself, making for a fairly compelling backstory and, of course, a shocking betrayal along the way.
