10 New Directions For WWE After WrestleMania 41
5. Jey Uso Leading Raw As World Champ
WWE announcer Michael Cole noted that Jey Uso was 0-3 against Gunther and 0-6 in World Titles matches before Saturday night's opener for the World Heavyweight Championship. This preamble told anybody who was paying attention that Uso was about to put a 1 on those records somewhere. He did exactly that, but few could've predicted that Jey would tap Gunther out via submission.
Fans seem torn over that on social media, but the lead story is that Uso finally vanquished his greatest challenge to become Raw's leading light. The live crowd were with Jey every step of the way. Triple H's next hurdle will be finding an opponent Uso has as much chemistry with as he does with Gunther, but this was a colossal moment in Jey's career, and he deserves to revel in it.
He has fully arrived as a singles main event star, meaning he's also come a long way from playing underdog rebel to Roman Reigns back in 2020. Some might've despised seeing Gunther tap out, but it did make sense within the framework of the story considering the heel's brutal beatdown of Jimmy Uso weeks before. The now former-World Champ isn't the first heel to fall into his own trap and get ultimate comeuppance - it's sort of what happens to bad guys eventually.
Going forwards, it's going to be vital that Jey is presented as a true main eventer. He absolutely cannot play second fiddle to anybody on Monday nights, and that includes guys like John Cena or even The Rock. Holding a belt like this should elevate Uso to the top of the pecking order on Netflix.
