10 Reasons CM Punk's Legal Attack On WWE Was A Mistake

3. WWE Play The Smart Game

A different way of looking things might be that WWE look to appease Punk in all of this - with the long term hope of getting him on side. That'd work against Punk's long term wish to leave wrestling. Say the company is gracious in his letter requests, establishing somewhat of a friendlier relationship, the end result might be that bridges are mended. That could be a strategy WWE have in mind, subtley getting one over on Punk by making him feel in control. He gets his merchandise royalties and 2K royalties, then starts thinking "hey, these guys aren't so bad after all." WWE would actually be playing the long game, and when they finally get Punk back on side with a return, that's when they screw him! Just look at the way someone like Bret Hart got portrayed upon returning to WWE; while his comeback was nice, it in some ways diminished Hart's mythology. You almost got the impression at times that McMahon was deliberatley putting Hart in angles to subtley bury the wrestler. Remember some of the Bret mic segments? How about the broken leg? How about his in-ring return? WWE had got Hart back and sold him on all of that, but it was ultimately a blemish on the Hitman's career. Punk's current action could lead to much of the same. He gets what he wants, his opinion changes of WWE, and then before he knows it he's back in the one place he swore against ever going back to.
