10 Small Changes That Would Improve WWE
3. Call More Holds
This one is marginal between a "big" and "small" change, since WWE announcers such as Joey Styles and Jim Ross have complained in the past about being told to focus on "storytelling" rather than calling a match.
But wrestling isn't as slow paced as baseball and doesn't have breaks between action like football, so when the announcers go off on tangents that often have nothing to do with the match or any of its participants, it subconsciously tells the audience, "we don't care about this match, and neither should you."
Michael Cole rarely seems to pay attention to the action; Tom Phillips has flashes of promise on NXT, but he doesn't seem to know the name of any of the moves, nor does he know what to say about a big spot other than “OOHH!”
Mauro Ranallo is far and away the best at calling a match, but time will tell how long it will be until he has Vince McMahon screaming in his headset about promoting more social media initiatives or making more Attitude Era references rather than calling the match like it's a legit sport.
Announcers are WWE's ambassadors, so if they don't seem invested in the wrestling, neither will the audience.
