WWE rarely makes any references to the Undertaker’s American Badass gimmick. Maybe it’s the character’s vulnerability when compared to the Deadman, or maybe it’s because it wasn’t a direct creation of Vince McMahon’s. Either way, WWE tends to omit that period when discussing the Undertaker’s history, and that includes the original Undertaker/Brock Lesnar feud.

Every minute detail, from Lesnar eliminating Undertaker from the 2003 Royal Rumble, to the fact that Undertaker had never defeated Lesnar on PPV, would make the desire to see them fight again that much greater. This would be presented as Lesnar’s advantage, given his history of overpowering the Undertaker.

WWE’s production department would use as much footage of Lesnar demolishing the Undertaker as possible, including footage of Lesnar standing victorious at No Mercy 2002 in Undertaker’s signature match, Hell in a Cell. Almost instantly, Undertaker would be presented in a more vulnerable way without having to look weaker from a physical standpoint.

This would also allow for more storytelling opportunities and hype, as the commentators would constantly ask if Undertaker could avenge his losses from years prior, or if Lesnar would keep his own winning streak against the Undertaker going.

Even though WWE has a terrible habit of altering or forgetting certain aspect of their own history, for this historic storyline, an exception to that rule must be made, in order to make sure that fans who might not have seen these two men feud in the early 2000s see their rivalry in a different context.
