10 Things You Didn't Know About Macho Man Randy Savage

9. Savage Almost Made It In Professional Baseball

Immediately out of high school, Savage was signed to the St. Louis Cardinals organization as a catcher. He would make his debut in 1971 at the age of 18 in the Gulf Coast League affiliate for the Cardinals. While he batted .286 in his first season in the minors, he only had played in 35 games and had 81 plate appearances. He would play three more seasons in the Gulf Coast League with pretty good success in terms of batting average and on base percentage. Unfortunately he couldn't get any traction to get promoted and spent his last two years in lesser minor leagues such as the Western Carolinas League and Florida State league where he struggled with strikeouts and his batting average. Overall in four minor league seasons, Savage would finish with a .252 batting average, 16 home runs, and 90 runs batted in over a total of 869 at bats. Thankfully Savage saw the writing on the wall and started training for professional wrestling in the offseason in 1973.
