Eight years earlier, Jericho marched into the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Pennsylvania on a mission. Unthinkably, less than one year into his WWF run, he planned to corner Vince McMahon backstage before that 17 April 2000 episode of Raw and tell him he "wanted out" of the company. WCW had already been in touch about a return there.

Then, one of the writers told him he'd be winning the belt that night.

Austin described this moment as a bit of a test for his friend. Vince put the WWF Title on him in a match with Triple H, then the writing called for a bait and switch moment later in the same show. The fans in PA popped huge for Jericho's win though, which told McMahon everything he needed to know.

Backstage, Jericho asked the boss if it'd be weird to kind of but-not-really win the belt. Vince told him not to worry, because he'd "have it again someday". That one comment totally flattened any thoughts Chris had about leaving. He never told McMahon that he almost quit.
