Admittedly, there was hope for both the WWE Intercontinental and United States Titles just last year.

Following WrestleMania 31, Daniel Bryan and John Cena held each respective belt, and the future looked bright. Fast forward just 12 months on, and those straps are currently in the possession of The Miz and Kalisto.

The Miz has the more interesting scenario feuding with Cesaro, but Kalisto's title reign has been redundant for much of the early part of the year. He just exists as champion, which is hardly inspiring. When Cena was champion, people were enthused to see him defend the title. It had meaning.

It could be argued that the title reigns of Cena and Bryan were a mere blip, because WWE hadn't exactly promoted either secondary belt with much purpose over the past decade or so prior to that.

This is a problem, because it totally negates the function of having such championships.

The modern era has put less emphasis than ever before on the importance of the titles, have WWE forgotten how to promote their own champions effectively?
