10 Things You’ll Never See In WWE Again
6. Racially Insensitive Gimmicks
Traditionally, wrestlers either from or said to be from a nation at loggerheads with the United States have been cast as heels by default. This has been true of Germans, Russians, Japanese and (more recently) those of Arabian, Middle Eastern or Muslim descent.
Oh boy, did pro wrestling ever love those old 'minority hates the West' stories and religious hatred concepts.
There is some good news: characters like the States-bashing Muhammad Hassan, the thieving African-American Cryme Tyme team, the grass-cutting Mexicools and the savage Saba Simba are a thing of the past. Sure, to some these were little more than caricatures of religious or cultural backgrounds, but some were also steeped in offensive hatred.
After all, fans were asked to boo Hassan because of his heritage long before he'd actually done anything to create heat. These racially insensitive gimmicks, including the white supremacy of Chavo Guerrero's awful Kerwin White persona, would spark outrage if WWE tried them today.
