Who was Ric Flair trying to convince most here - the wrestling fans who had followed his career, WWE bosses who wanted to move on from 'Nature Boy' moments for good or himself? 24 hours after losing an epic WrestleMania XXIV match vs. Shawn Michaels, Ric appeared on flagship show Raw and told fans he would never pull on a pair of boots and wrestle again.

Tears fell (most of them from Flair's eyes), and WWE put on a celebration worthy of any true grappling icon. This was one of the most lavish, heartfelt and professionally-produced retirement occasions ever. There was just one tiny problem with the whole thing: Ric was lying when he said he'd never wrestle again. He was back working shots for a Hulk Hogan tour by 2009, then joined TNA.

Hell, the ever-controversial 'Naitch' was only wrestling what was billed as his last match ever in 2022! To put that into context, we're talking over 14 years after he did the honours for Michaels in Orlando at 'Mania XXIV. Fourteen years, for crying out loud. He was washed up in '08 once he took that superkick from Shawn, and yet there he was almost literally dying during a nightmare tag match at Starrcast.

Maybe Flair thought he could stay away from the spotlight when he made that vow to fans on Raw all those years ago, but he didn't stick to it for very long. It was mere months before Ric was telling anybody who'd listen that he could still get himself into shape for another WWE run. The company, mercifully, was having none of it.
