10 Times Wrestlers Thought They Were Fired For Sure
1. Dolph Ziggler
After finding themselves catapulted into the spotlight from almost the second they arrived on the main roster scene as part of an ongoing McMahons vs. D-Generation-X feud, The Spirit Squad suddenly found themselves on the outside looking in on the back of one catastrophic loss.
Once the dust had settled on a painful defeat to DX and Ric Flair in a five-on-three handicap match in November 2006, the team were made the butt of a rather embarrassing joke as Triple H and Shawn Michaels slapped an 'OVW' sticker on a crate with the unit inside, suggesting they were set for a long ride back down to developmental.
Some 15 years later, it's now been revealed that the unit actually assumed this was the final nail in their WWE coffin at the time. Dolph Ziggler claimed as much in a recent Twitter post in response to a fan asking if he was aware his run in the group would result in a singles push for him.
No. when dx stuffed us in a box & we were taken off tv, I assumed I was fired https://t.co/vmQirfnLC8— Nic Nemeth (@HEELZiggler) April 3, 2021
Thankfully, Ziggles lived to bump another day, going on to win a ton of accolades during his now-17 year stay in WWE, including lifting the World Heavyweight Championship on two occasions.
