10 Times WWE Creative RUINED Their Biggest Stars

3. Steve Austin Leads The Alliance

It could be argued that turning Steve Austin heel at WrestleMania X-Seven was the biggest mistake his employers could have made in 2001. Yes, it's a solid argument, but it was also arguably worth trying; by '01, Austin had long-since peaked as a heel, and it was bold of he and the WWF writers to give something else a go.

Making him the head of that WCW/ECW invasion though? Unforgivably stupid.

Despite the obvious lack of star power on The Alliance side, it didn't make sense that a WWF stalwart like Austin would proudly represent WCW. Years earlier, he had been cruelly ditched by that company and forced to pick up the pieces of his career in the WWF. Staying loyal to the company who helped him become a megastar as "Stone Cold" would've been more logical.

That invasion angle needed guys like Austin on the WWF side, and he should've been defending the house he had rebuilt from WCW and ECW forces. It didn't need the creative team's refusal to see that, or their staunch belief that Austin should remain heel when fans were crying out to see him "open up a can of whoop ass" on the invaders.
