10 Times WWE Got The SummerSlam Main Event Wrong

WWE sometimes ruins the party of the summer.

Triple H Brock Lesnar

SummerSlam dates back to 1988, and is arguably WWE’s second biggest show of the year. After WrestleMania, the defunct Wrestling Classic, and Survivor Series pay-per-views, it was the company’s fourth attempt to create a yearly event. It worked out brilliantly, and gave them a big show to air in spring, fall and summer. Along with Mania and Royal Rumble, it is one of the three long-standing pay-per-views to never miss a year since its inception.

The first SummerSlam main event delivered a hot Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage vs. Andre The Giant and Million Dollar Man match. Other main events have also been exceptionally booked, like Undertaker vs. Steve Austin in 1998, Brock Lesnar vs. The Rock in 2002 and CM Punk vs. John Cena in 2011. All great, or historically significant matches.

However, sometimes WWE misses the mark completely when it comes to the show of the summer. They weren’t in tune with what the fans wanted, and gave us some forgettable matches that no one wanted to see. You can’t get a hit every time, but the company has struck out badly on a number of occasions. Let’s take a look back at 10 times WWE gave us the wrong SummerSlam main event.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
