10 Times WWE SummerSlam Was Better Than WrestleMania
9. SummerSlam 1991
WWE's grim use of the Gulf War tainted WrestleMania VII and tanked its ticket sales. Out front, the company dared to suggest that Sgt Slaughter was such an over heel that a move to the indoor LA Sports Arena from the 100,000-seater outdoor Los Angeles Coliseum was required to protect him from fatal threats. In reality, his pro-Iraq craic was in such poor taste that it simply wasn't driving emotional or financial investment.
The same, thankfully, couldn't be said about 1991's majestic SummerSlam card. Slaughter's persona was put out to pasture in an all-star main event featuring the Ultimate Warrior and special guest referee Sid Justice, while the undercard was filled with inconic babyface title wins for Bret Hart, The Legion Of Doom and Virgil.
It was a good night to be a good guy, unless your name was Randy Savage. Unseen on the pay-per-view but revealed on television the following weekend, his and Miss Elizabeth's wedding was crashed by Jake Roberts and The Undertaker in a grisly scene involving Roberts' terrifying King Cobra.
It'd get worse before it got better for the Macho Man, but 1991's 'Biggest Party Of The Summer' otherwise went off without a hitch.
