10 Ways To Make WWE's Brand Split More Compelling
8. Create A New Title
Or forget what I just said and create another title!
If WWE firmly believes that the route they’re currently on with Raw vs. SmackDown is the best course of business, then they should add one minor touch to the feud by adding a new belt that can only be defended on joint brand pay-per-views.
This Inter Promotional Title would give us fresh match ups every couple months, but wouldn't give away huge showdowns like Owens vs. Styles. Just give the belt to someone like Sami Zayn, and have him face off against a similarly positioned wrestler on the SmackDown brand. Whoever holds the title continues to stay on their own show, as “crossing into enemy territory” will very much be frowned upon.
This wouldn’t be the first time that the company had a title in mind that would only be defended on rare occasions. When the European Championship was conceived, it was only going to be defended in European countries. That would give fans an extra hook to buy tickets to the show. Makes sense! WWE, though, soon had it defended on TV and pay-per-views in the United States, which defeated the whole purpose of it.
It won't fix everything, but having a belt (or even a trophy...perhaps a nice plaque) that an exciting mid-carder holds would add a little extra to joint pay-per-views, and give more of a feeling of competition between the brands.
