10 Worst Times Celebrities Got Physical In Wrestling
1. The Guy From Scream 2 Wins The WCW World Heavyweight Championship
Wrestling fans of a certain age will be aware that calling David Arquette "The guy from Scream" is a reference to one of The Rock's typically blistering promos. To quote the line in full:
The Rock also knows damn well, what in recent years the WCW title has come to... Diamond Dallas Page? Booker T? The guy from Scream 2, the dog from Married with Children, the maid from the Jeffersons! Shane McMahon, this WCW title is just like your sister, everybody gets a turn!"
Casual shaming aside, it's hard to argue with The Great One. Once a company has devalued its biggest title to the extent WCW did when it placed the belt on David Arquette, it's damn near impossible to take it seriously again.
Credit where its due: Arquette, a lifelong wrestling fan, was horrified when he heard of WCW's plans and actually did a decent job portraying himself as a delusional d*ck in way, way over his head.
That still doesn't change the fact that the WCW World Heavyweight Championship should never have been used for a cheap publicity stunt, however. The belt itself spun off from the NWA title of the same name, meaning WCW irrevocably tarnished over 50 years of history for 5 minutes of fame.
At least when Gronkowski devalued a belt, it was one that was less than a year old and was chiefly designed as a comic prop. This was a whole different kettle of fish, and proof that when it comes to celebrities in wrestling, less is very much more.
