10 Worst WWE Moments Of 2006
6. Vince McMahon Beats “God”
Anyone who watched the extensive Vince McMahon documentary series on Netflix will know firsthand how...unique (ahem) the guy is. For example, McMahon claims he has multiple brains working at the same time. He brags about this, and the fact that one of them is sexually obsessed. That's clearly a regrettable statement considering the grim controversies that have surfaced about his personal life since.
In 2006, Vince was still trying to shock the wrestling world and garner his company some mainstream press by ticking off anyone he could think of. At Backlash, he decided to capitalise on Shawn Michaels finding religion by teaming HBK with "God" in a bumper tag bout vs. himself and his son Shane. Yep, WWE promoted that an actual deity would be performing on pay-per-view.
They missed a trick by not riffing on the whole "[Mick] Foley Is God" craze.
Seriously though, this was the pits. Naturally, "God" no-showed the event (how unprofessional!), so the McMahons beat Shawn in a handicap effort. In reality, “God” was a stage spotlight and nothing more. Everything about this was just ridiculous, and it didn't endear WWE or Vince to the religious community whatsoever. He likely didn't give much of a toss about that though.
Fans who bought the event expecting to see Michaels pull a fast one on McMahon by introducing a new tag partner for the night certainly did. The spotlight gimmick was another cuff across the chops. Ironically, you can thank the creator of your choosing for bouts like John Cena vs. Edge vs. Triple H and RVD vs. Shelton Benjamin, because they saved the show from being appalling.
