10 Worst WWE Moments Of 2007
4. Vince McMahon = ECW Champion?!
No, the above image is not AI generated.
Vince McMahon won the ECW Title by pinning Bobby Lashley in a 3-on-1 handicap match at Backlash on 29 April. To hammer home his "hip and cool vibes", McMahon had started wearing a durag around this time after being shaved bald by Donald Trump and others at ‘Mania 23. It was an odd time, clearly, but booking himself to win the ECW Title was sure something.
Unfortunately for McMahon, Lashley wasn’t charismatic enough in the babyface role to make anything of this, and nobody really wanted to see Vince as ECW Champ for a while anyway. Worse, Bobby regaining the belt wasn't going to play before 'Stone Cold' sized pops from a decade or so before, so the whole thing was fairly pointless.
Vince had only relaunched the ECW brand in 2006, and yet here it was dead in the water already due to his decision making. It had started with a "Zombie", then extreme originals were downplayed in favour of newer WWE pet projects, then One Night Stand lost the ECW branding, then McMahon made himself champ. That's quite the slide considering the noise that had been made about ONS specials in 2005 and 2006.
On TV, commentators wondered aloud whether or not Vince had lost his mind after being humiliated at WrestleMania in front of the watching world. Where had they been for years (if not decades) before that? The head shave wasn't even the most embarrassing situation McMahon had booked himself in since becoming a TV character.
Footage of Vince wearing a title he'd help build must've given Paul Heyman nightmares.
