The number may even have sadly changed again by the time you're reading this, but, as of this writing, WWE has released 79 wrestlers in 2021.

That number is insane. That number is scary. That number is disgustingly baffling when held up against the record revenue numbers being achieved during that same period.

For some of the talent involved in the releases of 2021 and 2020, many of them didn't see their WWE exit coming. In the case of certain stars, that's totally understandable, for either their stock seemed to be on the rise or they'd recently penned new contracts with Vince McMahon's organisation.

Released in April 2020, Curt Hawkins has since explained to Chris Van Vliet how he "just wasn't expecting it" as he'd just signed a five-year contract extension(!) with WWE. Similarly, Lana made a Talk is Jericho appearance and proclaimed how she was caught unaware when Johnny Ace called her, told her how much she'd worked her ass off and improved in-ring, then informed her she was fired.

More recently, Franky Monet - a main roster-ready talent - was let go this November and talked about being left "confused, hurt, sad and honestly mad" by this. Likewise, Bronson Reed told Van Vliet of his own shock at being released, with him believing he was moving to Raw or SmackDown.

It sucks to see anyone lose their job, let alone during a global pandemic, and even worse when those involved are left so blindsided by this news.
