10 Wrestling Facts We Didn't Know Last Week (16 Oct)

1. Steve Austin Helped Eugene Get Booked By WWE

In Ohio Valley Wrestling, Nick Dinsmore played a very straight forward gimmick. Cast as a superb pro wrestler, Dinsmore was booked to wrestle rings around almost everybody. The wrestling-focused character didn't really seem to be one that appealed to WWE, so Dinsmore started telling people that he was thinking of going to Japan instead. This directly led to a meeting with Vince McMahon, set up by John Laurinaitis. Telling Dinsmore that he wanted some 'character based wrestlers', McMahon was excited when hearing about an idea Nick had been handed by Rip Rogers in OVW. The basic premise was to cast Dinsmore as a wrestler who was dense outside the ring, but lethal inside of it. Steve Austin happened to wander into the office, and assessed that Dinsmore must be excellent if he'd been trained by Danny Davis in OVW. The entire situation worked out perfectly, and Nick Dinsmore found himself booked to start the next week. From there, the character of 'Eugene' was conceptualised, an extension of Roger's earlier idea for the gimmick. Rip hadn't planned on the gimmick being mentally disabled, that came from the WWE creative squad. The character would become Dinsmore's ticket to fame.
