10 Wrestling Facts We Didn't Know Last Week (June 24)
3. Lex Luger Thought Vince McMahon Was Crazy For Turning Him Babyface
By now, most know the tale. Lex Luger didn't sign on with the WWF in 1992 to become a wrestler, he was instead the spokesman for the World Bodybuilding Federation, an offshoot promotion Vince McMahon was very much keen on. Once that flopped, Luger inevitably stepped into the ring, firstly as the arrogant 'Narcissist' heel character in early-1993.
Happy with his lot in the company, Lex was then shocked to be told by McMahon of his grand plans. Luger was to slam the mighty Yokozuna and turn babyface, becoming the WWF's new all-American hero in the process. Meanwhile, Luger sat scratching his head, unable to see the logic.
During an interview with The Two Man Power Trip Of Wrestling show, Lex voiced his firm belief that Vince had lost his mind when coming up with the idea. Luger wasn't sure how it could work, because he had been such a conceited heel for months on WWF television.
As time would eventually tell, the major babyface run didn't work out as management hoped. McMahon would not have played things any other way, according to Luger, because he was so set on making the face switch happen.
