10 WWE PPVs John Cena Main-Evented (But Shouldn't Have)

1. Over The Limit 2012 (Vs. John Laurinaitis)

Now, this happened a month before the cage match at No Way Out, but this takes the top of the list because it's the most egregious. At Over The Limit, Bryan and Punk had one of the best title matches in modern WWE history. It showed just how elite both men were in comparison to just about everyone else on the roster, and it holds up as one of the finest of either man's WWE runs.

What closed out the show, however? John Cena... wrestling a retired GM. To WWE and Vince McMahon, this was seen as more of a draw and something of more intrigue than the two best wrestlers in the company going at it. Rather than have people go away thinking "Wow, what an excellent match between two supreme athletes!" it was better to have them go away thinking "Wow, what a stupid main event. Big Show turning heel for the 100th time? Why do I even bother anymore?"

And look, it's not like WWE should always just blindly go with workrate in favor of a good story. After all, it is ultimately a good story that will get a program over. The problem was that Cena's feud with Big Johnny was not a good story. It was a waste of Cena's time and the audience's. And to have a joke match with a lame angle close out a show instead of something like Punk-Bryan speaks to WWE's often screwed-up priorities.
