Remember CM Punk's title reign in 2012? It started in 2011 and ended in 2013, spanning a whopping 434 days. It was the longest reign of the modern era, depicted as a truly monumental achievement in professional wrestling. It genuinely was, even if it came to an end after one People's Elbow and not much else.

As monumental as Punk's reign was, it didn't even come close to the longest WWE Championship reign of all time. It wasn't even half as long, not even a quarter as long. No, Punk's reign lasted only 15% of the time of the longest all time reign.

As most know, that honour belongs to Bruno Sammartino, who was the 2nd ever WWE Champion. His reign lasted a whopping 2,803 days, beginning in 1963 and ending in 1971. To put that into perspective, 2,803 days before Punk started his modern record reign he was just finishing up his feud with Raven in TNA.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
