10 WWE Stars Destined To Be Remembered For One Storyline

5. Chris Masters

The Master Lock Challenge was a simple but effective idea.

Chris Masters was gaining a reputation as something of a submission expert, and that was all down to his unbreakable version of the full nelson. Every week he would challenge someone to try and break out of the hold offering a cash prize if they could. Whether it was Melissa Coates, Sgt. Slaughter or even Shawn Michaels, no one was successful, and it was a whole two years before someone found the correct counter.

Over that time Masters would go on to gain more submission victories than anyone in WWE history, breaking the record held by Kurt Angle. He was also involved in several high-profile feuds, including against HBK and John Cena. However, as time passed, it lost its lustre and when it was eventually broken it was by Bobby Lashley and occurred on a regular episode of Raw.

Despite that, Masters did leave behind something of a legacy in WWE. He is one of only two people to render John Cena unconscious (the other being Rusev), and Cena has openly stated that he is the strongest competitor he has ever been in the ring with. Yet nothing he has done since has ever gained the momentum of the Master Lock Challenge, despite his obvious improvements as a worker over the years.

It’s all set to be his legacy, for good or bad.
