10 WWE Superstars Who Tarnished Their Legacy

4. Jake Roberts

Another legend of the 1980s, Jake 'The Snake' is one of the best heels wrestling has ever seen. A master of ring psychology and a man with an unusually calm, soft-spoken promo Jake was a big star in the 1980s and into the 90s. Unfortunately, with fame and money came temptation, temptation that Roberts could not ignore. He became addicted to drugs and alcohol and battled with the addiction for many years. This was first notable when Roberts returned to the WWF in 1996 after a spell in WCW and on the independent circuit out of shape and sporting a large gut. Although he was apparently clean during this run he relapsed and was released from his contract. From there, things started to get very dark for Jake. The release of Beyond the Mat in 1999 painted a very sad picture of Jake wrestling for small money on the indies and smoking crack cocaine while trying to reconcile with his estranged family. A low point came at the Heroes of Wrestling pay-per-view that year when a clearly drunk Roberts cut an incomprehensible promo on opponent Jim Neidhart. Roberts then rubbed a female fans breasts, played with his Snake in a suggestive manner, stumbled around the ring, passed out and eventually tried to take his clothes off when the broadcast cut out. Roberts toured the UK for All Star wrestling in 2001 and had further issues with drugs and alcohol that effected his performance. Roberts went into detail about his demons at this year's Hall of Fame ceremony where he was inducted. Roberts is on the end with help from friend and life coach Diamond Dallas Page. If Roberts can abstain from drugs and alcohol he could be a valuable addition to WWE in a backstage role.
