Before he began life in the WWE as Sami Zayn, the lovable underdog would make his living by travelling the world, performing for the biggest wrestling companies on the globe; from Real Quality Wrestling in the UK and Germany's wXw to the DDT promotion in Japan and the Mexico's legendary AAA.

Appearing as alter ego, El Generico, the Canadian journeyman made a real name for himself in the US in promotions like Pro Wrestling Guerilla, Ring of Honor and Chikara; however, he also made a little-known stop over in TNA Wrestling along the way.

The future NXT Champion would make his TNA debut in 2011 with two tryout matches. Once again appearing as El Generico, Zayn made two appearances for TNA in the dark match of both the January 11th and 12th Impact tapings at Universal studios.

A mixed bag for the faux Mexican luchador, Generico would lose to The Amazing Red in his first match; however, he would find better luck in his second, defeating fellow future WWE alum, TJ Perkins. While he never got the call to go back, the Canadian would make his move to NXT just two years later.

Olé!

Occasional wrestler, full-time gym rat and lifelong lover of the grapple game. Would probably buy you a shot of Jack at the bar in exchange for witty banter...and preferably more Jack. @MartynGrant88 for more wrestling-related musings and weight room wisecracks!
