7. The Road Warriors

As a wrecking force of bulging muscles and face paint, The Road Warriors ran through every team they came up against in the 1980s. They were a spectacular attraction in AWA, AJPW and Jim Crockett Promotions.

It was only when they finally signed with the WWF in 1990 that things turned sour for the team. The travel schedule back then was brutal on full-time performers, working 14 days on and 4 days off all year round.

It led Hawk to have more and more substance abuse issues to ease the pain his body was taking on the road and Animal being forced to sit out on the sidelines when his partner ate suspensions.

It famously came to a head at SummerSlam ’92 at Wembley Stadium in front of 80,000 fans. They took on Money Inc. at the event but Hawk throughout the day was high on hallucinogenic drugs and was in no state to perform. Animal and Money Inc. covered for him, with Hawk being so out of it in the match he couldn’t deliver the duo’s famous Doomsday Device finisher for the win.

Hawk ended up no-showing the following TV tapings and abruptly quit the promotion. He wrestled in Japan afterwards and ripped off the Road Warrior gimmick with Kensuke Sasaki. It all had a huge impact on Animal’s role and value in the WWF, as well as his pay.
