100 Greatest WWE Matches Of All Time (Ranked)

66. Gunther vs. Sami Zayn (WrestleMania 40)

Honestly, Gunther probably should've been knighted for the (grappling) God's work he was doing during a sensational 666-day marathon as reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion between June 2022-April 2024. Another match from earlier in his run vs. Sheamus has already graced the top 100 here, but even that wince-inducing strike-based battle couldn't better the underdog story of Sami Zayn.

Maybe it was the heightened aura of WrestleMania 40, or maybe Sami is just that damn good at playing the sympathetic workhorse everyone badly wants to see succeed. Combine that superior babyface presentation with Gunther's ridiculously robust heel veneer and you had a recipe for success in Philadelphia. What a fitting host city too, because both Gunther and Sami had respective bells ringing in their ears due to the cacophony of crowd noise.

They were fully responsible for that. Together, the duo put on a classic IC Title battle that'll live forever in 'Mania annals. It came super close to superseding one of the most cherished matches ever, which is really saying something. Historically, Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat from WrestleMania III will still be above it in the eyes of most though, but that's no disgrace.

Gunther being seemingly unbeatable and Sami getting over the line by the skin of his teeth then collapsing in a heap of bruises and ecstasy made this one special. Zayn's title win was one of the best moments from the entire 'Mania 40 weekend, and that's huge considering night two saw Cody Rhodes finally finish his story.

Good lord - Sami Zayn is really good at this stuff. So is Gunther.
