100 Greatest WWE Matches Of All Time (Ranked)

41. Ric Flair vs. Randy Savage (WrestleMania VIII)

The build up towards this WWF Title clash at WrestleMania VIII had been genius. Ric Flair, knowing Miss. Elizabeth was a weak point for Randy Savage, tried to sell the idea that he'd managed to woo (ahem) Liz first. That got under 'Macho Man's' skin, and things peaked when Ric, Mr. Perfect and Bobby Heenan revealed edited photographs of Flair and Elizabeth getting cosy.

Photoshop was uncharted terrain at the time, so a lot of folks bought into these pics and wondered how Randy would react once he got his hands on the 'Nature Boy' in Indianapolis. Knowing they had to get feisty, both guys outright ignored Vince McMahon's no blood/blading edict and got a lot of colour during their title fight.

That'd land them in hot water with the boss. Fines were handed out, which is kinda hilarious considering Bret Hart and Roddy Piper had used a blade earlier on to kick things up a notch during their Intercontinental Title match. Those lads got off with it. Randy and Ric sure didn't. Their financial loss was the actual match's gain.

All that claret added a ton to the action, that's for sure. Hulk Hogan and Sid Vicious may well have been on top of the marquee as WrestleMania's main attraction, but they had no chance of besting the high quality of this vastly superior WWF Title match and everyone knew it. Fines or not, Flair and Savage also knew they couldn't just have a meek, by-the-numbers showdown.

They needed blood. Gallons of the stuff.
