Fast forward to 2006.

Triple H and Shawn Michaels were back in the DX hot seat, albeit without most of the controversial tropes that had made them such a lightning rod in the late-90s before Shawn's would-be retirement due to injuries. D-Generation X 2K06 was even more sophomoric and relied on the kind of toilet humour that had Vince McMahon giggling himself to sleep.

Rumours began that WWE fancied trying the nWo on for size one more time around that same time. In essence, we'd have witnessed a D-Generation X vs. New World Order feud: Hunter and Shawn vs. Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. That certainly would've been brave considering how washed up Hall (in particular) was by then. Could he have even contributed much at all?

Further, the 2v3 dynamic might've been a little strange. Trips and Michaels may have needed a third member to round things out and make it 3v3, but...who? Sean Waltman wasn't really in the frame, and neither were New Age Outlaws like Road Dogg or Billy Gunn. So, drafting in someone new would've been another option, but that would've come with some serious risks and threatened the nostalgic feel of the entire plot line.

WWE torched the plan and went with DX feuding vs. Vince and Shane McMahon as the superior option. If only they'd shown that kind of restraint with The Bloodline in 2026, huh? Re-airing successful factions over and over again rarely works. Neither, mind you, do offshoots. Just ask The MFTs how being a Bloodline spin off worked out.
