The Young Bucks made the transition to the heavyweight division at the beginning of 2018 and solidified their move by capturing the IWGP Tag Team titles from LIJ’s Sanada and EVIL. Unfortunately, the Bucks lost their gold to the Guerrillas of Destiny at Fighting Spirit Unleashed, who have held onto the belts since.

Upon Sanada and EVIL’s World Tag League victory over Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa, The Young Bucks made their way to the ring to insert themselves into the championship scene. The Los Ingobernables duo guaranteed themselves a shot at the GoD’s belts come 4 January by defeating them in the tournament, but The Bucks made clear their belief that they are the next rightful challengers.

Since then, New Japan officially signed a three-way bout for the championship at Wrestle Kingdom. As such, the Guerrillas of Destiny's reign is in serious jeopardy as they will have to fend off both The Young Bucks and Los Ingobernables de Japon -- two teams who want not only the IWGP titles, but to also prove they are the greatest tandem in all of wrestling.
