12 Biggest Stories From The Crockett Cup And What The NWA's Future Holds

The original Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup was short-lived, lasting just three years between 1986 and 1988, but the famed tournament has remain etched in the minds of National Wrestling Alliance fans for three-plus decades. Drawing thousands to arenas in New Orleans, Baltimore, and the Carolinas, the NWA's top teams and stars battled for the ultimate prize in tag team wrestling.

Saturday night saw the Crockett Cup's revival in front of a packed crowd in Concord, North Carolina and a live audience on pay-per-view. Much like the original events from the late-1980's, some of wrestling's hottest tag teams and fastest rising young stars competed for the coveted Cup - as well as the newly reintroduced NWA World Tag Team titles.

Thanks to the NWA's current promotional partnerships, the tournament saw a variety of competitors from places like New Japan Pro Wrestling, Mexico's CMLL, and Ring of Honor. With team's like The Briscoes, the tandem of PCO and Brody King, and even the legendary Rock 'N' Roll Express, it was an impressive night for the NWA.

Beyond the three-round tournament, all of the NWA's championship belts were on the line - including a highly anticipated main event for the prestigious "Ten Pounds of Gold" between former best friends Nick Aldis and Marty Scurll.

Saturday's Crockett Cup was a fitting tribute to the NWA's lengthy past, but was just as much a look toward the future. The event began with a Wildcard battle royal as a collection of the Alliance's young stars competed for the final available slot in the night's tag team tournament.

Among the up-and-coming talents looking to solidify their place in the history books was the NWA's spiritual specter, Jocephus - joined by WWE and TNA alum Jay Bradley. Unfortunately for the duo, they failed to last long among the chaos - a disappointment sure to cause Jocephus to do some further soul searching. Similarly, the reigning AML Wrestling Tag Champions and North Carolina's own Dawson Brothers were unsuccessful in securing a spot in the Crockett Cup.

Surprisingly, two relative unknowns on the national stage - in a seemingly slapdash team - won the battle royal, earning their place in Saturday's tournament. Royce Isaacs and Thomas Latimer shocked many with their win, but unbeknownst to all they had plenty more surprises in store as the night carried on.
