12 Hilarious WWE Backstage Skits You Probably Don't Remember
6. Pigeons Can't Talk
At Survivor Series in November 2011, Awesome Truth (the fantastic, if short-lived team of R-Truth and the Miz) took on The Rock and John Cena in one of those godawful can-these-opponents-coexist storylines.
Why the WWE feels that audiences will be pumped up to see two wrestlers face each other down at a major event by showcasing weeks of them being bad tag team partners to one another beggars belief. Why would anyone care? How does that build excitement for the upcoming big fight spectacular?
In this case, it was The Rock and Cena, due to face each other at WrestleMania the following spring, who pulverised Awesome Truth for no other reason than that The Rock found a gap in his schedule where he could actually take part in a match. Surely there ought to be a better reason to book a match than because one of the participants is available?
Anyway. On the night, the Miz and Truth cut an interview backstage hyping up their, frankly, non-existent chances of winning against the two biggest babyfaces of the modern WWE era. That's when we were gifted with this golden moment in promo history.
The Madison Square Garden crowd actually gave Truth a legitimate standing ovation on that one... but the unsung hero of the promo is Matt Striker. If you play it again and watch properly, in the beat after the set-up when Truth says "You know what those pigeons said?" you see an intimidated Matt Striker reluctantly take back the mic and whisper a perfect pigeon impression in response, before Truth cuts back in with the actual punchline. Magic.
