12 Interesting Historical WWE Royal Rumble Facts

6. Two Over 40 Wrestlers Are In The Top Five For Longest Apperances

To win the Royal Rumble, you have to either have luck with the entrant draw, or longevity for those who are early entrants. There have been five wrestlers to have survived over an hour in the match. Two of the five didn't win, and all five guys were entered into the rumble at either #1, #2, or #3. Those five wrestlers are Rey Mysterio, Chris Benoit, Bob Backlund, Triple H, and Ric Flair. The interesting part about this group of five is that two of them were well into their 40's at the time of their achievement. First off, Ric Flair competed in the 1992 Royal Rumble just a few months after defecting from WCW. This match was unique because the Royal Rumble winner would win the WWF Championship. At the age of 42, Ric Flair outlasted everyone to win the match and clocking in at 1 hour and 2 seconds. The very next year, Bob Backlund entered the Royal Rumble during his comeback. He set the record for longevity in the match at the age of 43 with 1 hour, 1 minute, and 10 seconds. A record that stood until 2004 when Chris Benoit broke it. While Backlund didn't win the match, he had a very impressive showing for being 43.
