9 - The Hype Is Real

The Kenny Omega Vs. Jon Moxley hype video, something at which AEW excels generally, was awesome.

Omega should have cut a promo himself—the TNT audience knows him only as a wrestler, not a character, and his Being The Elite burial was the stuff of a master—but he was at his arch, ar*ehole best here. “What are you gonna do, Jon, are you gonna chain wrestle me?” he said, conveying his character and what Moxley hates about it in just one line.

Showing footage of Moxley’s gory Indy days was inspired, in that it revealed the years he has spent mastering this specific craft away from HD cameras and straight into the maw of real outlaw sh*t. If it were anybody else but Moxley, the mock hospital bed scene may have looked cheesy—but it’s Moxley, so it was badass.

The video effectively traced the long, twisting rivalry, the blaring drone soundtrack put it over as epic, and the footage promised total ultra-violence.

Great stuff that helped the balance of the show enormously.
